MYRTLE BEACH, S.C.—Republican presidential candidate Former Governor Mike Huckabee praised conservative members of Congress like Rep. Mark Meadows (R-NC) for standing up to the Republican establishment, and Huckabee urged conservative activists to support them.

Huckabee told Breitbart News’ Matthew Boyle on Breitbart News Saturday that conservatives need to rally around conservative leaders rather than tear them down.

“When we have a good courageous soldier for strong, solid fiscal policy who’s fighting for American workers,” Americans need to stand by them, Huckabee said.

“Congressman Meadows goes out and takes a stand and they try to cut his head off,” he added. “If we don’t leave our military soliders on the battlefield when they’re wounded, then we shouldn’t leave our political soldiers on the political battlefield when they’re wounded.”

Meadows has frequently fought the Republican establishment. He most recently voted against the rule that allowed for consideration of Obama’s request for fast-tracking the Trans Pacific Partnership (TPP). The move led the Republican leadership in Congress to strip him of an Oversight and Government Reform subcommittee chairmanship.

Huckabee also had another message for grassroots conservatives, warning them of the damage many Republicans are doing to the American economy.

“I want to make sure they don’t ever succumb to the notion that we should surrender to the economic collapse that has been brought about by bad policies over the past several yeas. Obama has made it worse, but let’s be fair, he hasn’t done it all by himself. A lot of Republican spending has resulted in the huge deficits and debts.”
