The tiny New Hampshire town of Dixville Notch has put Republican John Kasich and Socialist-turned-Democrat Bernie Sanders into the lead with the first primary votes, cast at midnight.
The Ohio governor won three votes to Donald Trump’s two, while Sanders won all four of the town’s Democratic votes, according to New England Cable News. Hillary Clinton failed to win a single one of the town’s nine votes.
Dixville Notch votes at midnight on the morning of the primary, thanks to a New Hampshire law that allows midnight voting if every single registered vote is cast. One was cast in Dixville Notch by absentee ballot.
Two other communities joined Dixville Notch this year in casting the first votes of the presidential primary.
In Millsfield, the Conway Daily Sun reported, Republican Sen. Ted Cruz (TX) was the clear winner, with nine votes. Trump won three, and one each went to Sen. Marco Rubio (FL), Kasich, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, former Florida governor Jeb. Bush, and former Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina. Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky also won a vote in Millsfield, though he has already suspended his campaign. Clinton had better luck in Millsfield than in Dixville Notch, besting Sanders by two votes to one.
In Hart’s Location, according to the Daily Sun, Kasich won another narrow victory over Trump, five votes to four, and Sanders defeated Clinton again, twelve votes to seven.
In sum: after early voting, Trump, Cruz, and Kasich are tied at 9 votes each, and Sanders is ahead of Clinton 17-9.
