Sen. Richard Blumenthal: Taxpayers Will Fund Abortion-on-Demand in ‘Medicare for All’

Abortion champion Sen. Richard Blumenthal says when the government completely takes over health care, all women in America will be able to abort their babies at any time during pregnancy and at taxpayers’ expense.

“I want to single out two groups of people,” Blumenthal said, as CNSNews.com reports, adding:

Number one, the women of America. They have been denied health care too long because of restrictions like the Hyde Amendment. Consider the Hyde Amendment history if we pass Medicare for All. And all those other restrictions on reproductive rights.

The Connecticut Democrat joined 16 of his colleagues in the U.S. Capitol Wednesday to tout Sen. Bernie Sanders’s (I-VT) “Medicare for All” single-payer plan.

The Hyde Amendment prohibits the use of taxpayer funds to pay for abortion except in order to save the life of the woman, or if the pregnancy results from incest or rape.

In a statement to Breitbart News, Tom McClusky, March for Life Action president, says, “Sen. Blumenthal, who is the federal champion of assisted suicide – a practice targeting the elderly and disabled for extermination, now wants to champion taxpayer funding for abortions by making the Hyde Amendment ‘history.’”

McClusky adds:

Between 1973 and 1977, the years between Roe v. Wade and the Hyde Amendment becoming law, the federal government spent about $50 million annually to fund approximately 300,000 abortions per year under Medicaid. Recent polling showed that a majority of Americans do not want their tax dollars funding abortion. The Charlotte Lozier Institute has also found that the Hyde Amendment saves more than 60,000 lives in the United States each year. How can anyone wish to do away with an amendment that has saved so many vulnerable lives?

In August of 2015 – as the Center for Medical Progress undercover videos were released exposing Planned Parenthood’s alleged profiteering from the sales of the body part of aborted babies – Blumenthal nevertheless defended the abortion industry giant in an op-ed at the Hartford Courant, in which he portrayed the organization as a provider of “women’s health care” and plugged its contrived statistic that “abortions represent only 3 percent of Planned Parenthood’s work.”

“To be clear, defunding Planned Parenthood would create an urgent, destructive public health crisis,” Blumenthal wrote.

Pro-life group Live Action produced a video debunking the “3 percent” myth:

The motion-graphics video demonstrates how Planned Parenthood calculates its deceptive “3 percent statistic” by dividing the number of abortions it performs by the total number of services it provides, counting a $10 pregnancy test or a package of condoms as equivalent to a $500 abortion.

Live Action president Lila Rose says Planned Parenthood’s “3 percent statistic” is calculated to deliberately deceive the public and minimize the organization’s abortion services.

“Even the Washington Post and Slate.com have called out the abortion chain for its deception,” Rose explains. “Three percent is not a real number, but over 320,000 abortions a year and a 30 percent market share of all U.S. abortions are.”

In a recent paper released by the Charlotte Lozier Institute (CLI), Planned Parenthood was shown to have obtained 35 percent of the U.S. abortion market – a figure that well overtakes the market shares of leaders in other industries.

CLI president Chuck Donovan and vice president and director of data analytics Dr. James Studnicki concluded:

There is little or no demonstrable capability for definitive diagnosis or a range of treatments for any disease or condition at Planned Parenthood centers. With the exception of abortion, Planned Parenthood does not provide any service that is not easily available from alternative providers.

While on the campaign trail in 2016, failed Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton also urged the end of the Hyde Amendment as another means to defend Planned Parenthood.

“I will always defend Planned Parenthood,” Clinton said. “And I will say – consistently and proudly – Planned Parenthood should be funded, supported, and appreciated; not undermined, misrepresented, and demonized.”
