The woman who falsely accused players on the Duke lacrosse team of rape in 2006 was found guilty of the second-degree murder of her boyfriend on Friday.
According to the Raleigh News & Observer, Crystal Mangum “was sentenced to between 14 years, two months and 18 years in prison” for the murder of Reginald Daye.
Mangum stabbed Daye, 46, on April 3, 2011, and that “was never in question.”
During the trial, Magnum claimed self-defense, claiming that she “poked” her boyfriend with a steak knife in the chest while “he was straddling her and trying to choke her.”
As the Observer notes, “Mangum is known as the woman who falsely accused three Duke lacrosse players of raping her in 2006,” which caused a national firestorm with media outlets trying the Duke players in the court of public opinion:
She told police the players hired her to perform as a stripper at their party and that they raped her in the bathroom. Evidence collected during the investigation did not match her story, and the charges against the players were dismissed, but not before the accusations became a national media story.
