Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) said on Tuesday that a staffer using his Twitter account “liked” a clip from a hardcore porn video on the social media platform by accident.

The video was quickly unliked on the account after tweets began to surface mocking the senator.

“Thanks for watching ted!” posted the account which had published the clip, before changing their biography to read, “Follow for the Same Porn [Ted Cruz] watches.”

In a post on Twitter, one of the actresses from the video also expressed her surprise at being featured in the news.

Following the incident, Cruz’s Senior Communications Adviser Catherine Frazier declared, “The offensive tweet posted on [Ted Cruz’s] account earlier has been removed by staff and reported to Twitter.”

Cruz later said a staffer with access to his account had “liked” the pornographic tweet by mistake:

“There are a number of people on the team who have access on the account. It appears that someone inadvertently hit the like button. When we discovered the post, which was I guess an hour or two later, we pulled it down,” Cruz (R-Texas) said of the incident. “It was a staffing issue. And it was inadvertent, it was a mistake. It was not a deliberate act. We’re dealing with it internally, but it was a mistake. It was not malicious.”

Cruz is an open critic of pornography and in 2016 claimed, “Pornography, with its harmful effects, especially on children, has become a public health crisis that is destroying the life of millions.”
