Bill Clinton: Obama Will Win 'Handily'

Former President Clinton said today on ABC’s “Good Morning America” that President Obama would win re-election “handily,” since he can argue that Americans are better off now than they were four years ago – a lie the media will certainly tell, but that Americans may well see through.

Here were Clinton’s comments:

If it is true [that Americans aren’t better off than they were four years ago], it is only because the financial collapse occurred in September of 2008, just a couple months before he became president, and didn’t bottom out until July 2009. Americans are going to be better off than they were on July 1, 2009 I think and in the aftermath of that. When the economy actually collapsed, there was about 7.5% shrinkage. His argument will be we put a floor under the recession and kept it from becoming a depression ….

I think they’ll be very reluctant given their opinion of the Tea Party Congress to give the White House and the Congress to the same party.

That’s far from a ringing endorsement of the Obama platform. It’s a “blame Bush” platform and a split government platform at best. But Clinton is right that this will be Obama’s re-election strategy, mainly because he has nothing else on which to run.

And yes, Clinton is wearing a Fonzie-style leather jacket. After the show, anonymous reports had Clinton actually jumping a shark.
