Dem Rep Sponsors Legislation Forcing Gun Owners to Buy Liability Insurance

Rep. Carolyn Maloney (D-NY) is sponsoring legislation to force gun owners to buy liability insurance or face a $10,000 fine.

Called the Firearm Risk Protection Act, the legislation is part of Democrats’ attempts to recoup the cost of gun violence by shifting the penalty toward those who buy firearms legally.

An attempt to force similar liability insurance on firearm owners has been tried to no avail in six states during the past few months. Those states are California, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, and Pennsylvania.

However, if liability insurance legislation could not succeed in states as blue as these, then its chances of passing through the Republican controlled House of Representatives are slim indeed.

Regardless, it should be noted that the Firearm Risk Protection Act has seven co-sponsors and Maloney is determined to use federal legislation to blaze a trail for states to follow.
