Illinois State Police Flooded With Gun Permit Applications
Illinois State Police are scrambling to deal with a backlog of applications for Firearms Owner ID (FOID) cards.
They received more than 28,000 applications in April alone, and those have not been added to the 76,000 backlogged applications from the first three months of the year.
Until April, every month since the heinous crime at Sandy Hook Elementary has been part of a record setting pace for FOID card applications. For example, in December there were 31,249 applicants. But in January there were 61,172, in February there were 56,078, and in March there were more than 70,000.
Illinois residents have to acquire an FOID card to own a gun legally.
State Police issued 338,610 FOID cards last year.
