A New York sheriff, David Cole is calling on concealed permit holders in his county to carry a gun “at all times” to help fight terrorism.

Cole is Sheriff of Steuben County.

According to the Star-Gazette, Cole wants “licensed concealed carry handgun owners to have their weapons on them at all times in light of recent terror attacks in the U.S. and elsewhere.” At the same time, he wants county residents “to take advantage of firearms and self-defense classes the sheriff’s office offers to better prepare for potential life-or-death situations.”

Cole said:

The Sheriff’s Citizen Police Academy will provide you with the knowledge needed to take advantage of your legal right to carry a firearm. To ensure the safety of yourself and others, make sure you are comfortable and proficient with your weapon and knowledgeable of the laws in New York state with regards to carrying a weapon and when it is legal to use it.

Cole also asks that law enforcement—”active and retired”—keep a gun on them “when they leave the house.”

In making this requests, Cole joins Sheriff Michael A. Helmig (Boone County, KY), Sheriff Paul J. Van Blarcum (Ulster County, NY), and Sheriff Wayne Ivey (Brevard County, FL), all of whom have made similar requests of residents in their counties following the San Bernardino attack.
