Two Boston police officers underwent critical surgery after being shot by a lone gunman. The gunman was killed by other police officers who responded to the shooting.

The two officers were listed in “extremely critical” condition after being shot late Wednesday night. The officers were responding to a call about a fight between two roommates when one of the men, wearing ballistic body armor, opened fire with what is being described by Fox News as an assault rifle.

The identification of the wounded police officers has not been released. The two officers were described as “veteran officers.” One of the officers had 28 years of service while the other was a 12-year veteran.

Boston police have identified the shooter as Kirk Figueroa, 33, from East Boston.

Nine other officers were taken to the hospital where they were treated for minor injuries, trauma, and stress, Fox reported.

Witnesses said the scene sounded like a war zone. In one video, multiple gunshots could clearly be heard.

The life of one of the officers may have been saved by the quick thinking of a fellow officer who put his hand in the wound to help control bleeding.

“One officer had his hand in one of the wounds and I think that was instrumental in getting the officer down to Mass General quickly,” Police Commissioner William Evens told reporters.

“Domestic calls, as you know, are probably the most volatile. You never really know what you’re walking into,” the Boston police commissioner continued. “And I think we see right now the dangers of our job.”

The two officers underwent surgery at Boston’s Massachusetts General Hospital and are listed in “extremely critical” condition. They survived the surgery, police tweeted, but remain in critical condition.
