The history department at UC Berkeley condemned an open letter allegedly penned by a professor for its criticisms of the Black Lives Matter movement. The anonymous letter criticized UC Berkeley faculty for failing to cultivate an environment that can tolerate criticism of social justice movements. According to the history department, criticism of Black Lives Matter “goes against our values.”

Florida State Faculty Demands Creation of ‘VP of Anti-Racism’ Position

Black faculty members at Florida State University published a list of demands for university officials this week. The faculty demanded that officials establish a new executive position that will solely focus on combating racism on campus. According to the faculty, the VP of anti-racism would lead a “paid Anti-Racism Task force composed of students, staff, faculty, administrators and individuals from the community.”

Binghamtom U. Plans to Defund Campus Police After BLM Demands

Binghamton University announced this week that it will decrease funding for its campus police department to comply with recent demands by Black Lives Matter activists. The funding will reportedly be diverted to campus programs that focus on mental health issues. The university will also establish the George Floyd Memorial Scholarship to “support future African American Leaders.”

Michigan State Research VP Stephen Hsu Resigns After Pressure over Research on Intelligence

Michigan State University Vice President for Research and Innovations Stephen Hsu was forced to resign this week over his research on intelligence. Over 800 faculty members and students signed a petition that called on the university to remove Hsu from his position over his research. Although Hsu has been forced out of his VP position, he remains a member of the Michigan State faculty.

U. of Georgia Marching Band Drops Signature ‘Gone With the Wind’ Song

The University of Georgia announced this week that its marching band will no longer play a song from the 1939 film Gone With the Wind during football games. The song “Tara’s Theme” has been the band’s signature song up to this point. The classic Victor Fleming film has recently come under fire over claims that it sanitizes racial and ethnic prejudice.

Michigan State Research VP Stephen Hsu Faces Calls for Termination over Research on IQ

Students and faculty at Michigan State University are calling for the removal of Stephen Hsu, the university’s vice president for research and innovation, over his research on intelligence. Hsu has fired back at students and others calling for his dismissal: “The Twitter mobs want to suppress scientific work that they find objectionable. What is really at stake: academic freedom, open discussion of important ideas, scientific inquiry. All are imperiled and all must be defended.”

Former Google CEO and Clinton lackey Eric Schmidt argued recently that Chinese students provide a vital benefit to the United States’ National Security interests. The Chinese government has come under scrutiny over the past year for using Chinese researchers at American universities to steal taxpayer-funded research.

Berkeley Will Rename Washington and Jefferson Elementary Schools for BLM

Two elementary schools named after George Washington and Thomas Jefferson in Berkeley, California, announced this week that they will change their names to comply with increasing demands for political correctness. The Berkeley Unified School District also announced a “Black Joy Campaign” to bring “racial equity” training to students and teachers.

UCLA Petition Defends Prof Who Refused to Delay Exam for Black Students

A group of students is defending UCLA Professor Gordon Klein, who was placed on leave after he denied a request to postpone a final exam for black students. Student activists at universities and colleges around the nation have demanded lenient grading and postponed exams for black students in response to the social unrest that has followed the death of George Floyd.

Princeton Is the Only Ivy League School Requiring SAT or ACT Scores for Fall 2020 Admission

Princeton University is the only Ivy League institution that will require all of its applicants to provide an SAT or ACT score next year. Most administrations of the SAT exam were canceled this spring in response to the Chinese virus pandemic. Princeton says it is evaluating its admissions process and may follow its Ivy League peers in putting a hold of at least one-year on its test requirement, but has not done so yet.

A statewide California student group encouraged students to engage in Antifa-style protests in response to the death of George Floyd. The Students for Quality Education organization encouraged students to put their “bodies on the front lines for Black lives.”

The Arizona State University student government encouraged its fellow students to contribute to various Black Lives Matter causes in a letter that was sent to the community this week. One of the suggestions was to use the Venmo payment platform to send cash to the unverified accounts of “Minneapolis activists.”

Windsor High School Principal Tiffany Riley has beensuspended this week in response to comments she made about the Black Lives Matter movement. Riley sparked controversy in the community when she criticized Black Lives Matter and advocated on behalf of law enforcement and equity for all. The Mount Ascutney School District called Riley’s remarks tained by “ignorance, prejudice, and lack of judgment.”

Former Harvard Professor Charles Lieber was indicted by a grand jury on Tuesday over allegations that he maintained an undisclosed financial relationship with the Chinese government by taking a position as a “Strategic Scientist” at the Wuhan University of Technology. The scheme is part of China’s “Thousand Talents” program, which sees to pay western academics to hand over research funded by the government of their home countries.
