On Friday, the Pentagon asked that armed citizens stop showing up at recruiting centers to stand guard for the unarmed military personnel inside.

According to Fox News, Pentagon Press Secretary Peter Cook said Defense Secretary Ash Carter “is currently reviewing recommendations from the services for making our installations and facilities safer — including our recruiting stations.” But in the meantime, they want armed citizens to quit showing up.

Cook said:

While we greatly appreciate the outpouring of support for our recruiters from the American public, we ask that individuals not stand guard at recruiting offices as it could adversely impact our mission, and potentially create unintended security risks.

Breitbart News previously reported that the U.S. Army Recruiting Command (USAREC) issued a July 20 letter instructing recruiters to avoid contact and/or conversation with armed “law-abiding” civilians who volunteer to guard recruitment centers and to report said volunteers to law enforcement “if the recruiter feels threatened.” On the same day, the United States Marine Corps Recruiting Station in San Diego issued a statement “asking local citizens not to stand guard by the recruiting offices,” according to CBS 8 San Diego.

Fox News reports that Governors in “Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Indiana, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma,  Texas and Wisconsin” are countering the disarmed condition of Army, Navy, Air Force, and Marine recruiters by arming the National Guard in their respective states so that they will be “[carrying] loaded guns on bases and at military recruiting centers.”

For example, on July 21, Breitbart News reported that Gov. Scott Walker acknowledged the “terror attack” against military personnel in Chattanooga and issued executive order #168 to “to arm certain Wisconsin National Guard personnel as reasonably necessary to preserve the lives, property, and security of themselves and other persons subject to the threat of an attack as occurred in Chattanooga.”
