Katy Perry has come under fire this week after sharing an image of a Hindu goddess on her Instagram page.

The pop singer, known for songs such as “Firework” and “I Kissed a Girl,” posted an image of the Hindu goddess Kali to her Instagram account on Wednesday, captioning the photo “current mood.”

Many users liked and commented on the seemingly innocuous image; but others didn’t take the post lightly, calling Perry a “disgrace” and the image “offensive.”

One user wrote: “This is a shameful and offensive act. You can’t compare yourself with The Great Goddess KALI MAA,” while another user added: “Respect her she is our goddess of hindu u can’t use it in this way, seriously u lost Respect in my eyes [sic].”

Not all of her fans were angered however, as some stepped in to defend her.

“Wow wow wow, calm down everyone, it’s a picture, it’s not like she directly did something to hurt anyone so cool it,” wrote one user.

“I LOVE KATY AND I KNOW SHE’S LOVE’S INDIA AND SHE’S Respect IT SHE’S DOSEN’T mean to disrespect For india or kali [sic],” wrote another.

Perry was raised in a conservative Christian household but has previously said she is not Christian.

“I’m not Buddhist, I’m not Hindu, I’m not Christian, but I still feel like I have a deep connection with God,” the singer told Marie Claire in a 2013 interview. “‘I pray all the time – for self-control, for humility. There’s a lot of gratitude in it. Just saying ‘thank you’ sometimes is better than asking for things.”

Perry married actor Russell Brand in 2010, taking part in a large Hindu ceremony in India. It was reported that the couple stayed at the Oberoi Vanyavilas hotel during the wedding, and posted an image together outside the Taj Mahal. The couple divorced in 2012.
