A medical student’s selfie taken with a “dying woman” in the Mexican border city of Reynosa has sparked controversy all over Mexico. The scandal resulted from a photograph that the student took of herself with what appears to be a dying woman in the background.

The photograph appears to have been taken at one of the hospitals in the border city of Reynosa just south of Hidalgo Texas.

Adding fuel to the fire is the message in Spanish that appears to have been made by Maria Jose Gonzalez when the photo was posted “I went to do the rounds and this lady was dying so selfieeee.”

According to Mexico’s Proceso Magazine, the photograph was from a WhatsApp message that was leaked on to Facebook and then went viral.

Once leaked, the photograph began to be posted on Facebook this weekend by various individuals criticizing the Gonzalez for her lack of tact and respect in the photograph; it didn’t take long for Mexican news outlets to get ahold of the story.

According to Proceso, Gonzalez is a student at Reynosa’s Valle De Mexico and the school upon learning of the now viral photo the university has moved to start disciplinary action stating that the photograph doesn’t represent the values of the university.

In a Facebook post, Gonzalez claims that the photograph was a misunderstanding. The medical student claims that the photograph was from her first day interning at the hospital and that she had become friends with the woman who had given her permission to take the photo.

The photograph that was most likely disrespectful of the patient is being investigated by the med school.

The Mexican city or Reynosa is located just across the border from McAllen/Mission area of Hidalgo County, Texas.
