24 hours: Two Texas Oil Drillers File for Bankruptcy

Two Houston-based drilling companies filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection within a 24-hour period ending Friday as the oil slump continues to take its toll on the sector at large. The firms plan to shed a combined $3.2 billion in debts to their creditors.

McLennan County Vows Fight with Texas AG over Concealed Handgun Signs

McClennan County Commissioners are defying instructions by the Texas Attorney General to remove 30.06 signs prohibiting licensed gun owners from carrying a concealed handgun into areas in the courthouse and annex where they are permitted. The dispute is over common areas where Texas law says it is legal for license holders to carry handguns. The commissioners have hired lawyers to fight the directive of the attorney general.

City Manager of Texas Border Town Jailed on Federal Corruption Charges

Another government official from the Texas border region has been jailed on federal corruption charges. His name is added to a long list of government employees or officials that have been implicated bribery and other abuses. The various counties that make up the Texas border have a long history of being largely controlled by Democrats.

Federal Judge Says Texas Can’t Outlaw Harboring Illegal Aliens

A federal district judge in San Antonio has issued an order stopping a Texas law criminalizing the harboring of illegal aliens, at least for now. The judge issued the preliminary injunction in MALDEF’s (Mexican American Legal Defense and Educational Fund) lawsuit challenging Texas House Bill 11, a law which open border advocates are fighting because they say it improperly targets illegal alien shelters and those who rent to illegal aliens.

Pope Brings 12 Muslim Refugees to Rome in Papal Airplane

Pope Francis visited the Greek island of Lesbos and took twelve Muslim refugees back to Rome with him on his papal airplane. The Vatican issued a statement that the refugees included six children. The twelve included three families who have had their homes bombed during the Syrian war.

2nd Texas Cop Shot in Less than 12 Hours

An Austin police SWAT officer was shot early Thursday morning while executing a search warrant. He was the second Texas police officer shot in the past twelve hours. The officer is in stable condition recovering from his wound.

Texas A&M Unveils Proposed ‘Campus Carry’ Recommendations

The Texas A&M University System unveiled its proposed “campus carry” recommendations for implementation on Wed., Apr. 13. State law requires public universities have new rules in place to comply with the law passed as Senate Bill 11 (S.B. 11) during the Texas 84th Legislature in 2015. S.B. 11 goes into effect on August 1 for all state institutions of higher learning, except at community colleges where this change occurs on August 1, 2017.

WAR ON COPS: Houston-Area Deputy Constable Ambushed, Shot Multiple Times

A Harris County deputy constable was shot six times in what is being reported as an “absolute ambush.” The attack occurred late Wednesday night and the deputy went under immediate surgery to save his life. It is unknown at this time whether the deputy constable will survive. Deputy Constable Alden Clopton is reportedly an 11-year veteran of the Constable’s office.
