Wednesday before a hearing of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Secretary of Defense Ash Carter confirmed what Marine Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told lawmakers at a House Armed Services Committee hearing a week earlier, which was ISIS was not contained.
President Barack Obama had made the claim ISIS had been “contained” late last month in an interview with ABC News. However, Carter’s statement that ISIS has not been contained is the latest of several high-ranking officials within the Obama administration that have contradicted the president’s claim.
“I agree with what General Dunford said, yeah,” Carter said after a line of questioning from Armed Services committee member Sen. John McCain (R-AZ).
