Friday on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” former Democratic National Committee chairman Howard Dean said President Barack Obama getting involved in the current political cycle could be a net negative for Democrats.
Dean said he disagreed with Caroline Randall Williams New York Times op-ed, which called on Obama to have more of a presence in today’s politics when”Morning Joe” co-host Willie Geist asked Dean if he thought Obama should be more involved.
“From a political point of view, no,” Dean said. “You only have one president at a time, and to violate that would actually give Trump a target at which he could carry on—Trump loves to have a convenient whipping person, and that would be — that would be Obama. There is a way to do this, but you have to really thread the needle.”
Dean went on to say the “millennial” generation needed to make its own way. He declared last year’s presidential election “this generation’s” Edmund Pettus Bridge or Kent State incidents but warned Obama’s entrance into politics would give Trump a target.
“They’re going to have to fight through this by themselves,” he continued. “Obama can’t do it. He is not the president anymore. You only have one president at a time, and I think if he gets into this big-time, he makes it easier for Trump, not harder.”
