MSNBC’s Maxwell on Border Family Separation: Not Massive Protests ‘Because the Children Are Not White’

Monday on MSNBC’s “Deadline,” network political analyst Zerlina Maxwell said there was not more public outrage over President Donald Trump’s zero-tolerance policy at the U.S.-Mexico border that resulted in children being separated from their families because the kids are not white.

Maxwell said, “The child separation policy is a racist policy. I think it is a stain on the nation, and the cruelty of it, to quote Adam Serwer of The Atlantic, is the point of it. The reason we’re not up in arms because these children are not white. The fact that they separated them from their parents with no intention of reuniting them or tracking them was not even a thought they had. That they might not reunite the kids because they didn’t care enough to think it through. Additionally, I think the reason there is not massive protests is because the children are not white. That makes me sad every single day They should be protected no matter who they are, and putting them in cages is something that everyone should remember. Every day we watch this president, he is lying, he is saying ridiculous things, and it can be entertaining because he is so ridiculous, but the policies that he is implementing are cruel. And it is hurting communities of color. ”

Host Nicolle Wallace asked, “I don’t disagree with you, but the outcry, Laura Bush came out and said this is reminiscent of one of the ugliest chapters of Japanese internment camps. So why isn’t there any pressure among Republicans—I don’t disagree with anything you said, but why doesn’t anything happen?”

Maxwell said, “Because the children are not white.”

Wallace shot back, “But they’re babies.”
