Box Office Predictions: 'Hunger Games' Sets Epic Record, 'Delivery Man' Gets Returned

The conversation all year has been about this weekend–will The Hunger Games: Catching Fire be 2013’s top film grosser? Finally, we get some answers.

Sensei’s weekend predictions and revenue results are as follows:

1. “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” ($168 million) – Film is set to dominate the next few weeks, but the question now is can it match Iron Man 3’s opening ($174 million) from earlier this year? Sensei still feels it will become November’s highest opener (current leader is Twilight: New Moon with a $151 million start). At the start of this year, Sensei felt this film would out-gross both Iron Man 3 and Man Of Steel in overall domestic box office. Look for that to still be the case. The odds are definitely in this one’s favor to be the year’s top film.

2. “Thor: The Dark World” ($17 million)– Film has already broke the $500 million mark worldwide. God of Thunder, indeed.

3. “The Best Man Holiday” ($13 million)  Sensei said this one would surprise last weekend, and boy did it ever. Sensei expected a healthy $20+ opening (many felt that prediction was crazy), film actually made it to a $30 million opening. A very good start to this sequel, film has already passed the original Best Man’s gross ($34 million), so anything past this is pure Christmas candy. Also, Sensei can’t emphasize enough how the film’s “spiritual side” helped increased its viewing demographics.

4. “Delivery Man” ($7.5 million) – The newest comedy offering from Vince Vaughn suffers from really low buzz. Film’s concept also feels like a bad TV episode to countless past shows (didn’t even NCIS have an episode where DiNozzo was involved with a sperm bank some years back?) Look for low results here.

5. “Last Vegas” ($5 million) – This one actually added 155 theaters last week. Smart move. Film will continue to play well with older demographics, and even sneak in some younger ones for good measure.

Those are Sensei’s calls. Any feel differently about the predictions?
