Ten days before Clint Eastwood’s American Sniper set box office records and endeared itself to a generation of American war fighters, UK’s The Guardian suggested Chris Kyle ought not be described in heroic terms because he was actually “a racist” who enjoyed “killing brown people.”

According to The Guardian“Much of the US right wing appears to have seized upon ‘American Sniper’…[with] shallow comprehension–treating it with the same unconsidered, rah-rah reverence that they would the national anthem or the flag itself.”

They ask if Eastwood is aware of how some will view this film, suggesting that many may rally around Kyle and those like him as a result.

The Guardian: “If [Eastwood], intentionally or not, makes a hero out of Kyle–who, [at a] bare minimum, was a racist who took pleasure in dehumanizing and killing brown people–is he responsible for validating racism, murder, and dehumanization? Is he a propagandist if people use his work for propaganda?”

They claim that those who’ve embraced Eastwood’s depiction of Kyle leave no room for questions about whether he “might have been a good soldier but a bad guy; or a mediocre guy doing a difficult job badly; or a complex guy in a bad war who convinced himself he loved killing people to cope with an impossible situation; or a straight-up serial killer…”
