Hollywood actresses, including Sally Field, Elizabeth Banks, and Debra Messing, joined Hillary Clinton at a rally in Culver City on Friday morning. They defended the Democratic presidential frontrunner and tore into her chief rival Donald Trump, just days before the critical California primary.
Field, Banks, and Messing were joined by fellow actresses Sophia Bush and Mary Steenburgen, all of whom helped introduce the candidate at the rally at West Los Angeles College.
The actresses reportedly wasted little time in going after Trump.
“He had a university, it no longer exists,” Hunger Games and Pitch Perfect star Banks said, according to the Daily Mail. “He had a TV show, it no longer exists. He had hair…,” she trailed off, to laughter from the audience.
For her part, Will and Grace star Debra Messing reportedly called the presumptive GOP nominee a “reckless bigot and misogynist,” while One Tree Hill‘s Sophia Bush said that Trump “wants to make our country a fearful reality show contest.”
Two-time Oscar-winner Sally Field seemingly refrained from criticizing Trump, focusing instead of defending Clinton from her high unfavorability rating among the general electorate.
“What is this, a high school popularity contest?” the Forrest Gump star said. “She’s not running to be everybody’s friend, she’s running to be the President of the United States.”
“Women have spent the last 100 years trying to get out from under the expectation that they had to be sugar and spice and everything nice,” Field reportedly added. “We don’t need sugar and spice and everything nice. We do need kindness. We do need generosity. These qualities are not the same as being likable.”
In her own remarks, Clinton referred to her San Diego stump speech from the previous day, when she repeatedly attacked Trump over his foreign policy positions.
“Yesterday in San Diego I had the opportunity to just repeat what Donald Trump has said,” Clinton told the crowd. “I didn’t make any of that up. I mean, it would be hard to make up. And by the end of working on that speech, even I was saying, ‘Did he really say all of this?’ Well, indeed he did.”
Clinton is in the midst of a 30-engagement, five-day swing through California in an all-out effort to quash the momentum of insurgent Democrat rival Sen. Bernie Sanders. At least four polls released over the past week have Clinton and Sanders locked in a statistical tie ahead of Tuesday’s vote, while a USC/Los Angeles Times poll released Thursday found Sanders with a one-point lead.
The Clinton campaign will get another shot of celebrity star power on Monday at the Greek Theatre, where Stevie Wonder, Christina Aguilera, John Legend, Ricky Martin, and Andra Day are set to headline a “She’s With Us” fundraiser concert.
