Italy announces arrest of Slovenian in anti-terror operation

MILAN (AP) — Italy’s interior minister has announced the arrest of a Slovenian suspected of being part of an international terrorist organization.

Angelino Alfano announced the arrest Sunday on Twitter, saying that “another anti-terrorism action has been completed with success.”

The 26-year-old suspect was also suspected of helping to recruit and radicalize aspiring foreign fighters. Alfano didn’t say where the suspect was arrested, but said it was coordinated by prosecutors in Venice and carried out with the cooperation of police in neighboring Slovenia.

Alfano said the operation is “yet another confirmation that our system of security and prevention is working well.”

Italy last year expelled more than 60 suspected Islamic extremists while monitoring more than 90 foreign fighters as part of stepped-up measures to prevent attacks on Italian soil.
