A teenage Muslim girl in Phoenix was allegedly kidnapped, beaten, and raped on April 20 when she refused to enter into an arranged marriage. Two Muslim families had arranged for the groom Mohamed Abdullahi to marry the girl, who may be 18 or 19.

Sgt. Trent Crump said, “Her family entered into an agreement or ‘Nikah’ (formal Islamic marriage) with another family against the girl’s wishes.” Police said the young girl fled for roughly two weeks when she discovered the arranged marriage but returned home because she had to graduate from high school. They added that the girl may have been taken against her will to Abdullahi’s apartment in East Phoenix, where the assault allegedly occurred on Monday.

The police report stated that Abdullahi punched the girl in the left eye, she fell down, whereupon he allegedly straddled her and choked her, causing her to fall to the ground. He pulled the girl’s shorts and underwear off and dragged her to his bedroom, ignoring her pleas and then raping her. After the assault, the girl used her tablet to contact a friend for help.

One witness, Trina Childs, saw men carrying the girl into the apartment. She said, “I saw some guys carrying a girl in, so I ran over to the front and they threw somebody—that girl in this house, and all of them just walked out… She was crying, she was just screaming, and shaking her head.”

Abdullahi was arrested April 21; police found his right hand, penis, and testicles injured, with blood stains on his underwear and shirt.

The families of Abdullahi and the girl both come from Somalia; they are under investigation. Abdullahi is being held without bond.

Although the girl had neck bruises, a bite mark, and had been raped, police stated she is reluctant to cooperate with them, saying she does not want to press charges against the groom or her family.
