On the November 29 airing of Face the Nation, Republican presidential hopeful Dr. Ben Carson suggested the Planned Parenthood shooting shows that pro-lifers should “tone down their rhetoric.”

Carson did indicate that abortion supporters need to “tone down their rhetoric” as well, but he lumped both sides together as espousing “hateful rhetoric” that causes divisions.

According to Face the Nation, Carson said, “There is no question that you know hateful rhetoric no matter which side it comes from – right or left – is something that is detrimental to our society.” He added:

Our strength in this country has traditionally been in our unity. And we are allowing all kinds of circumstances to divide us and make us hateful toward each other. And the rhetoric is extremely immature, divisive and is not helpful when you have outside forces [like] global Islamic radical jihadists who want to destroy us.

Carson said there is “no question [that] the hateful rhetoric exacerbates the situation,” and he urged “civil discussion about our differences.”

Host John Dickerson then pointedly asked, “Should those that oppose abortion rights tone down their rhetoric?”

Carson replied, “I think both sides should tone down their rhetoric.”
