A man is dead after opening fire on four Baltimore police officers on Thursday night.

The shooting occurred at an apartment complex in West Baltimore around 9:30 p.m.

Details on the shooting are scant, but ABC 2 reports that the four officers were drawn to the apartment complex by the sound of gunfire. Upon arriving, “the officers located the suspect who was armed with an AR-15 style rifle.” The suspect opened fire, and the officers returned fire, striking the suspect with at least one round in the upper body.

The Baltimore Sun reports the suspect then ran, dropping the gun in nearby woods before collapsing on “a second floor landing in the apartments.” The suspect was taken to a hospital, where he died.

Thursday night’s officer-involved shooting marks the ninth time this year Baltimore police have been forced to open fire on a suspect.

Maryland has an “assault weapons” ban; nonetheless, the suspect was armed with “an AR-15 style rifle.”
