Police in Rochester Hills, Michigan, arrested an illegal immigrant after he was reported for exposing himself to a woman at a local grocery store, reports say.

The original incident happened on August 19 when a man exposed his genitals and made rude gestures toward a female shopper at a Troy, Michigan, Meijer store. The victim called police and reported the incident, but the suspect had fled the scene before police arrived, as the Livonia Observer reported.

But several days after alerting the public to the incident, police received a tip that the suspect was likely an illegal immigrant living in Pontiac named Daniel Alfredo Torres-Rivas, a native of El Salvador. Police went to the home where Torres-Rivas was reportedly living but did not find him. However, a short time later, he arrived at the police station and turned himself in.

He was charged with a single count of aggravated indecent exposure and pleaded not guilty during an August 22 appearance at the 52-3 Rochester Hills District Court.

The crime carries a maximum penalty of $2,000 in fines and perhaps two years in jail.

“I find it completely disgusting and sad that this individual, who is illegally in our country, felt comfortable enough here to harass a woman in a very public store by masturbating to completion,” Oakland County Sheriff Mike Bouchard said in a statement. “I thank the tipster who helped us lock up this sick pervert.”

The suspect was released by local authorities after his first appearance in court, but he was immediately picked up by federal immigration officials on charges of illegally entering the country. Officials report that Torres-Rivas applied for a visa but was denied. The sheriff’s office reported they had called federal officials to confirm the suspect’s identity thereby alerting the feds to his status as an illegal immigrant, prompting their involvement in the case.
