Iowa’s Republican lawmakers plan to pursue the elimination of a concealed carry permit requirement in the state once this year’s legislative session begins.
Iowa Republicans have been actively seeking to enhance the exercise of Second Amendment rights in their state for some time.
For example, on April 13, 2017, Breitbart News reported that Gov. Terry Branstad (R) signed a “Stand Your Ground” law into place. Radio Iowa reported that legislation signed by Branstad also recognized the legality of “children under the age of 14… [to] handle a pistol or handgun if they’re supervised by a parent.”
The Sioux City Journal reports that Republicans plan a push to eliminate the state’s concealed carry requirement in the coming legislative session. This would make the Second Amendment a valid permit throughout the state.
Republicans are also seeking to a resolution to the Iowa Constitution that borrows language from the Second Amendment.
The resolution says: “The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed. The sovereign state of Iowa affirms and recognizes this right to be a fundamental individual right. Any and all restrictions of this right shall be subject to strict scrutiny.”
Iowa is one of four states considering the elimination of concealed carry permit requirements this legislative session. The other three are Texas, Oklahoma, and South Dakota.
