It seems like just a short time ago that Suns were led by Steve Nash, Shawn Marion, and Amare Stoudemire as the top threat against the Lakers for Western Conference supremacy. This past season, the once proud franchise was fourth from the bottom, posting a 25-57 record.
Moving forward, the team will look to Jeff Hornacek to turn their fortunes around, coming to an agreement Sunday. Phoenix went through Alvin Gentry and Lindsey Hunter as coaches this season and fired general manager Lance Blanks.
Hornacek comes to the Suns after serving as an assistant for the Utah Jazz. The former guard began his career in Phoenix where he was drafted out of Iowa State. As a member of the Suns, Hornacek enjoyed his most productive season, scoring 20.1 points per game during the 91-92 season. Following that season, he was traded to the 76ers in the deal that brought Charles Barkley to Phoenix before ultimately ending his career in Utah playing alongside John Stockton and Karl Malone.
The team Hornacek is set to inherit could generously be described as abysmal. Although the team holds the #5 and #30 picks in June’s NBA Draft, the best player currently on the roster is Goran Dragic which should reveal plenty about the turnaround job expected of Hornacek.
