Report: Dolphins Coaches Asked Incognito to Toughen Martin Up

Miami Dolphins coaches reportedly asked Richie Incognito to toughen up Jonathan Martin.

According to a report in the Sun Sentinel, coaches made the request after Jonathan Martin missed a voluntary workout last spring.”

Sources told the paper “they believe that Incognito, who is accused of using racially incendiary language and bullying tactics against Martin, may have taken those orders too far.”

Martin left the team last week after a prank was reportedly the last straw. Incognito, who has a history of troubles on and off the field, was suspended indefinitely and reports indicate he may never return to the Dolphins. Incognito reportedly made the call in which he left the voicemail with racially-charged language after coaches encouraged him to make a call to Martin to get him to attend the team’s OTA program, which is voluntary.

“Richie is the type of guy where if he’s on your team you love him,” a teammate told the outlet. “If he’s not on your team, you hate him. Every team needs a guy like that.”

Other players reportedly said Martin should have gone to the leadership council with his problems, but the paper noted that Incognito was on the leadership council and had considerable influence, which is why Martin may not have gone to team authorities when Incognito took things too far.
