Figure Skating Controversy: Petition Calling for Investigation Already Has 1.7 Million Signatures

A petition calling for an open investigation of the women’s figure skating judges and results has been signed by more than 1.7 million people less than 24 hours after South Korea’s Yuna Kim may have been robbed of the gold medal in front of a panel of biased judges.

The petition at Change.org says that, “This is NOT for Yuna Kim, this is for the FAIR SPORTSMANSHIP THAT IS SUPPOSED TO BE CENTRAL TO THE WORLD EVENT OF THE OLYMPICS.”

The servers have already crashed multiple times, and NBC noted that though “online petitions are often great for headlines and ineffective in generating real results, yet few hit one million signatures, particularly in such a short amount of time. Especially when it comes to sports.”

American figure skaters like Ashley Wagner, who was in the final group, have also called for more transparency with the scoring after she said she was “speechless” when she discovered that the Russian skater won gold over Yuna Kim.
