Richard Sherman: Just Say No to N-Word Ban

Richard Sherman has a big mouth. But one that emits boasts more than bad words. Nevertheless, the Seattle Seahawks cornerback considers the idea of referees penalizing players for the use of the N-word an “atrocious” idea.

The Super Bowl champion told Monday Morning Quarterback that using the N-word ending in “a” differs from using it ending in “er.” “It’s in the locker room and on the field at all times,” Sherman told MMQB. “I hear it almost every series out there on the field.”

In a strange turnabout, the NFL crackdown on racist language has many black players upset. Disagreement on the word seems less a racial than a generational divide. Sherman actually stops just short of calling attempts to penalize usage of the racial slur “racist.”

“It’s an atrocious idea,” the Compton native opined. “It’s almost racist, to me. It’s weird they’re targeting one specific word. Why wouldn’t all curse words be banned then?”
