Argentine Fan Shot in Brazil After Argentina Beats Nigeria in World Cup

An Argentina fan was shot in the leg during a bar fight in Brazil. It occurred after Argentina defeated Nigeria 3-2 to advance in the World Cup.

Reuters reported:

The Argentine fan shot in the leg escaped serious injury and he was treated at an emergency room during Wednesday’s pre-dawn hours, according to a public security spokesman. Argentina’s state news agency Telam identified the injured fan as 35-year-old Gonzalo Nunez.

Reuters also reported that six Argentinians were arrested when they attempted to steal tickets to the game.

The violence brings more worry to Brazil since there is a chance the two countries will face off in the championship game. There is a huge rivalry between Argentina and Brazil and security was given names of thousands of people who belong to the violent “barras bravas” fan clubs for Argentina. Thirty people were stopped at the border.

On June 18, Chileans stormed the media center before Chile’s game against Spain. Witnesses said the fans did not have tickets to the game and wanted to attend. Security managed to hold 30 people, but many escaped.
