George W. Bush Honors Derek Jeter with Surprise Pregame Visit

Former President George W. Bush surprised New York Yankees legend Derek Jeter Wednesday night in Texas as the Rangers, like every team the Yankees visit this year, honored New York’s captain on his farewell tour.

“It’s an experience,” Jeter said. “That’s a gift within itself. Not too many people can say they’ve had the President come out and honor them in a ceremony. It meant a lot to me.”

As the New York Daily News noted, before Bush threw out the first pitch in Game 3 of the 2001 World Series at Yankee Stadium after the 9/11 attacks, Jeter told the President, “Don’t bounce it; they’ll boo you.”

Bush gave Jeter a framed photo of the moment from his George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum during a pregame celebration.
