Tufts U. to Shut Down Confucius Institute After Student Protests

Tufts University in Middlesex County, Massachusetts, has announced that it will shut down its Confucius Institute in the wake of student protests. The university, however, said it is ending the Confucius Institute to “focus more on our strong and growing direct relationship” with Beijing Normal University. Student protesters attacked the school’s “shameful collaboration between the university administration and the Chinese Communist Party.”

The College Board, the company behind the SAT exam, reportedly has established partnerships with China’s Communist government. The College Board, like many universities and colleges in the United States, has maintained a relationship with the Confucius Institute, a Chinese government-backed organization that aims to increase China’s influence on education around the globe.

Report: Stanford Accepted $58 Million from Chinese Government

Stanford University is facing criticism over its extensive relationship with the Chinese government. Between 2013 and 2019, the university reported that it had accepted $58 million in gifts and contracts from China and its communist government. Only Harvard, USC, and the University of Pennsylvania have taken more money from China.

Binghamton University recently defended its partnership with the controversial Confucius Institute, an education organization funded by the Chinese government.
