“We are not going to make it easy for them to pick a Supreme Court justice,” Schumer told MSNBC host Rachel Maddow. “It’s hard for me to imagine a nominee that Donald Trump would choose that would get Republican support that we [Democrats] could support.”

Texas Defends Mental Standards in SCOTUS Death Penalty Case

Another Texas death penalty case was argued at the United States Supreme Court this week. The two questions presented was whether executing someone 35 years after the imposition of a death sentence, and allegedly using outdated medical standards to determine intellectual disability, is cruel and unusual punishment prohibited by the U.S. Constitution. The Eighth Amendment prohibits executing those who are intellectually disabled.

Abortion Poll: Trump-Pence Mainstream, Clinton-Kaine Extreme

Although Hillary Clinton and the beleaguered Democratic National Committee (DNC) are attempting to paint Donald Trump and Mike Pence as out of step with the country on abortion, recent polling shows that a majority of Americans actually agree with Trump-Pence on this hot-button issue, while Clinton is pushing an abortion agenda that almost 80 percent of Americans oppose.

SCOTUS Issues Blow to Texas Abortion Law: Strikes Down HB 2

The United States Supreme Court has issued a decision which is a significant blow to Texas abortion law by striking down Texas House Bill 2 (HB 2). In a 5-3 decision, the nation’s highest court has struck down HB 2 in the case of Whole Woman’s Health et al. v. Hellerstedt. The legislation was signed into law by then Governor Rick Perry in 2013.

Supreme Court: Pennsylvania Chief Justice Cannot Rule on Death Penalty Case

In a 5-3 split decision, last Thursday the Supreme Court held that Chief Justice Ronald Castille of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court cannot be part of deciding a convict’s case because 30 years ago he was one of the prosecutors involved with the original prosecution, creating an “impermissible risk” of bias that would violate due process.

SCOTUS Denies Texans’ Request to Block Political Representation for Noncitizens

The U.S. Supreme Court handed down a unanimous decision Monday for the case Evenwel v. Abbott. The ruling denied two Texas voters’ requests to perform legislative redistricting measures that would have reduced the political clout of urban, non-citizen dominant areas of the state. Noncitizens, felons and minors will continue to be accounted for when political boundaries are drawn in the foreseeable future.
