Sky News in Australia is reporting that two suspects have been arrested in Tanzania in last week’s acid attack on two British teenagers on the island of Zanzibar.
Police questioned five men on Friday and many believed two were the perpetrators. Mohamed Mhina declined to give further details on the arrests.
Kirstie Trup and Katie Gee, two 18-year-old Jewish girls, were spending a month volunteering as teachers at the St. Monica nursery school. Last Wednesday, two men on mopeds drove past several groups of white tourists before they stopped in front of the girls. One of them threw acid on them before speeding away.
They returned to London early Sunday morning and are resting comfortably at Chelsea and Westminster Hospital.
Zanzibar relies on tourism and government officials have condemned the attack. The radical Islam group Uamsho is suspected to be behind the attacks. They wish for independence from Tanzania in favor of strict Muslim laws.
