The United States is re-opening 18 of its embassies in the Middle East and Africa on August 11. These facilities were closed a week ago in response to terror threats from the Al Qaeda affiliate in Yemen (AQAP).
The State Department closed these embassies after intelligence officials intercepted communications between AQAP and Al Qaeda in Pakistan and learned of a pending terror attack.
Fox News reports that the U.S. embassy in Yemen will remain closed for a time, as will the U.S. consulate in Lahore, Pakistan. The consulate in Pakistan was closed on August 9.
The State Department released a statement saying they will “continue to evaluate information about these and all [U.S.] posts and [will] take appropriate steps to best protect the safety of [U.S.] personnel, American citizens traveling overseas, and visitors to [U.S.] facilities.”
