Pentagon: American Military Aircraft Strikes Islamic State in Iraq
The Pentagon confirmed Friday morning that the United States has conducted an airstrike on Islamic State (formerly ISIS/ISIL) artillery in Iraq.
Rear Adm. John Kirby announced news of the strike on Twitter just moments ago:
The Pentagon revealed that two F/A-18 aircraft dropped 500-pound laser-guided bombs on a mobile artillery piece near Erbil.
On Thursday night, President Obama confirmed that he had authorized military air strikes in Iraq against Islamic State forces.
“I believe the United States of America cannot turn a blind eye,” he said. “We can act, carefully and responsibly, to prevent a potential act of genocide.”
