Arab parliamentarians collectively withdraw from Nato PA session in protest of use of 'Persian Gulf'

WAM ROME, 25th November 2013 (WAM)– The delegations of the U.A.E. Federal National Council (FNC) and the parliaments of Arab and Gulf countries on Monday withdrew from the second session of a joint seminar organised by Parliamentary Assembly of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (Nato PA) in protest of the organisers’ designation of the ‘Persian Gulf’ instead of ‘Arabian Gulf’.

The withdrawal of Arab delegations from the joint seminar’s second session titled ‘Iran at the Crossroads’ took place after the Jordanian parliamentary delegation demanded lecturers and organisers use ‘Arabian Gulf’.

In response to the collective withdrawal of Arab delegations, the organisers of the Nato PA meeting had to change the name to ‘Arabian Gulf’ and to apologise to the Arab delegations for using the other name.

‘The Domestic Situation in Iran’ and ‘Prospects for Nuclear Negotiations with Iran’ were the two titles of lectures delivered in a joint seminar at the second session of Nato PA.

The said two-day joint seminar is jointly organised by Nato PA’s Mediterranean And Middle East Special Group, Sub-Committee On Transition And Development, and the Chamber of Deputies of the bicameral Parliament of Italy.
