Gabby Giffords Meets With George H.W. Bush During Gun Control Campaign In Maine

As Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly raised money for Maine gun control gubernatorial candidate Mike Michaud (D) this weekend, they also had the opportunity to meet “privately with Republican former President George H. W. Bush and his wife Barbara at their nearby [Kennebunkport] compound.”

Associated Press reports indicate Giffords and Kelly were scheduled to meet with the Bushes Saturday, August 9.

The same reports show that Kelly first became friends with the Bush family during his time in Houston as an astronaut.

According to ABC News, Giffords and Kelly had lunch with George H.W. Bush and his wife during a similar gun control tour through Maine in July of last year. At that time, Giffords and Kelly were on their “Rights and Responsibilities” tour for more gun control via expanded background checks.

In 1989 George H.W. Bush used an executive order to implement gun control by “halting the importation of some semi-automatic rifles” after an AK-47 was used in a heinous crime “that killed five children.” And in 1995 he wrote a letter ending his affiliation with the NRA because of the way NRA executive vice president Wayne LaPierre criticized the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms’ treatment of “law-abiding citizens.”
