Kevin McCarthy Ducks Media Outside Conservative Gathering

House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, the most-likely-to-win candidate to replace outgoing Speaker John Boehner, ducked reporters outside the Capitol Hill Club on Tuesday evening. McCarthy went in and came out of a back door of the event, refusing to speak with nearly 30 reporters from a variety of television and print outlets camped outside.

The House Freedom Caucus, Conservative Opportunity Society, House Liberty Caucus and House Tea Party Caucus heard speeches from Reps. McCarthy, Chaffetz and Webster—then grilled all three House Speaker candidates with follow-up questions—at the Capitol Hill Club.

Kevin McCarthy is presumably going to win at least 125 votes on Thursday for Speaker of the House, which would make him the GOP conference’s designated candidate—essentially a nominee of sorts—but House conservatives could band together to deny anyone the Speakership on the floor of the House on Oct. 29 when the full House votes for a replacement to outgoing Speaker John Boehner.
