Former Smiths frontman Morrissey canceled a planned concert in Iceland because the venue did not take its meat dishes off the menu.
A fan site for the singer, True to You, reports that Morrissey canceled the gig at Harpa Concert Hall in Reykjavik “due to the refusal of management… to sell only vegetarian food on the night of the projected Morrissey show.”
“I love Iceland and I have waited a long time to return, but I shall leave the Harpa Concert Hall to their cannibalistic flesh-eating bloodlust,” the singer reportedly commented.
According to Billboard, Morrissey is notorious for his anti-meat animal rights beliefs, so much so that he refuses to play music festivals if there is a hamburger stand in the vicinity. A tour rider from the Smiths’ 1986 “Queen is Dead” concerts shows Morrissey prefers “thinly cut cheese sandwiches,” wine, and gin.
The venue probably should have seen it coming; the Smiths’ second album is titled Meat is Murder.
In June, Morrissey canceled the rest of a planned U.S. tour while he recuperated from a severe respiratory infection.
