Two boys hunting rabbits found a suspicious item later determined to be an “extremely dangerous” explosive device near the central Texas town of Rosebud, in Falls County.
The device was located Tuesday evening under a bridge on Farm to Market Road 1963 outside Rosebud. After one of the boys alerted his father about the discovery, the father (a military veteran) contacted law enforcement notify them of the device, KCEN reported.
An initial inspection by firemen determined the device could be dangerous and the McLennan County Bomb Squad (MCBS) was called to the scene. Bomb technicians arrived on the scene at about 10:00 p.m. An agent from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) arrived about 11:30 p.m.
An x-ray inspection by the MCBS revealed three “suspicious devices” the Waco NBC affiliate reported. The devices included a plastic bottle wrapped in duct tape, a fuse-type detonator device and a cooler. Shotguns shells and an as yet unidentified liquid were revealed by the x-ray inspection.
MCBS officials and the ATF agent agreed the package was an improvised explosive device that was designed to spray shrapnel after exploding. The device was disabled by using a PAN disrupter that fired a water shot at the device, information provided by the McLennan County Sheriff’s Office to Breitbart Texas revealed.
Tests are now being conducted to determine the type of liquid that was in the device.
Falls County Sheriff Ben Kirk told Breitbart Texas they are interviewing people at this time but do not have a suspect.
McLennan County Sheriff Parnell McNamara told reporters in Waco that the device “could have done some real damage if it had gone off with anyone around.” The McLennan County Sheriff’s Office had responded to the scene in response to a request for assistance from the Falls County Sheriff’s Office.
