PIEDRAS NEGRAS, Coahuila — The murder of a man whose body was found next to a narco-message reflects renewed violence in this border region as rival cartel factions continue to fight for drug territories.

Last Sunday, state and federal authorities responded to a neighborhood near a community soccer field after the discovery of a murdered man. The crime took place in Piedras Negras, a northern city that borders Eagle Pass, Texas.

Preliminary information from investigators revealed that the victim is a man about 30-years of age who was shot in the head and taken to the field. The victim had been wearing a black t-shirt and blue jeans. He was barefoot.

At the scene, authorities also found a poster board with a narco message signed by one of the warring factions of Los Zetas, announcing their arrival to Piedras Negras.

As Breitbart Texas previously reported, the criminal organization that at one time was known as Los Zetas has gone through a series of fractures into various factions. One of the groups, Cartel Del Noreste (CDN), continues to operate in the trafficking of drugs and illegal immigrants in the region. For more than a year, the CDN fought with Vieja Escuela Z or “Old School Z”, and now also with the faction “Grupo Bravo”, now calling themselves only “Z”. The majority of the fighting, kidnapping and gruesome executions have taken place in Tamaulipas and Nuevo León. Coahuila has largely been able to avoid the turf wars.

The message left with the body hints to a spike in violence in the coming days with the claimed arrival of the group.

Editor’s Note: Breitbart Texas traveled to the Mexican States of Tamaulipas, Coahuila, and Nuevo León to recruit citizen journalists willing to risk their lives and expose the cartels silencing their communities.  The writers would face certain death at the hands of the various cartels that operate in those areas including the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas if a pseudonym were not used. Breitbart Texas’ Cartel Chronicles are published in both English and in their original Spanish. This article was written by “J.M. Martinez” from Piedras Negras, Coahuila.
