REYNOSA, Tamaulipas — Members of Mexico’s Gulf Cartel were caught trying to dig their way out of a border state prison through a 300-meter tunnel.

The tunnel was discovered this week by Mexican state police in the rear section of the prison. Tamaulipas authorities revealed to Breitbart Texas that the makeshift tunnel measured approximately 300 meters in length and led from inside the prison out toward the outer perimeter fence.

Authorities revealed the tunnel was not finished but called in reinforcements to secure the prison to prevent a breakout. Since early May, the Reynosa has been ground zero for a fierce war for rival factions of the Gulf Cartel, Breitbart Texas reported. The fighting has led to more than 95 murders and dozens of arrests. Reynosa is immediately south of McAllen, Texas.

State police officers previously found tunnels, bunkers, and weapon caches inside the prison. Earlier this year, dozens of inmates aligned with Los Zetas Cartel dug their way out of another state prison in the Tamaulipas capital of Ciudad Victoria. In recent months, inmates waged a war for control of the prison in Ciudad Victoria using machine guns, Breitbart Texas reported.

Editor’s Note: Breitbart Texas traveled to the Mexican States of Tamaulipas, Coahuila, and Nuevo León to recruit citizen journalists willing to risk their lives and expose the cartels silencing their communities.  The writers would face certain death at the hands of the various cartels that operate in those areas including the Gulf Cartel and Los Zetas if a pseudonym were not used. Breitbart Texas’ Cartel Chronicles are published in both English and in their original Spanish. This article was written by Tamaulipas’  “A.C. Del Angel”  and Breitbart Texas’ Ildefonso Ortiz.
