The Monica Lewinsky sex scandal is getting yet another small-screen treatment, as Amazon has obtained the film rights for Linda and Monica.
According to Deadline, Linda and Monica explores how Lewinsky and Linda Tripp’s friendship and their lives were turned upside-down in the wake of one of the biggest scandals in the history of American politics.
The film follows Tripp’s secretly recorded phone conversations with Lewinsky, a White House intern, as she offers details about her sexual relationship with President Bill Clinton. The tapes of the women’s conversations are leaked to Kenneth Starr, the special prosecutor who was investigating another Clinton-releated scandal, Whitewater. The tapes led to the subpoena of evidence, including Lewinsky’s now-infamous semen-stained blue dress, and ultimately led to Clinton’s impeachment.
The script was written by Flint Wainess.
The upcoming Amazon film is not the only project about the scandal currently in development.
Writer-producer Ryan Murphy previously announced that an upcoming season of his Emmy-winning FX anthology series, American Crime Story, will focus on the Lewinsky-Clinton White House sex scandal. Fox 21 Television Studios and FX Productions have optioned author and CNN legal analyst Jeffrey Tobin’s 2000 book A Vast Conspiracy: The Real Sex Scandal That Nearly Brought Down a President, on which the FX series will be based.
In February, Murphy told E! News that the series would set the Lewinsky sex scandal as a “right-wing” plot to “tear down” President Bill Clinton, and on “the other women” who were ensnared in the saga.
“It’s not really about Hillary Clinton. That book is about the rise of a certain segment of a right-wing group of people who despised the Clintons and used three women, Paula Jones, Monica Lewinsky and Linda Tripp to try and tear him down,” Murphy said.
