Get rid of Hosni Mubarak and let the people of Egypt embrace “democracy.” That’s been the policy line of the Obama Administration. Hope and Change, with an Islamists twist. And so where are we right now?
1. Iran has appointed an ambassador to Egypt– the first in more than 30 years. They selected an experienced diplomat with 28 years of service, meaning they expect to take the relationship very seriously. This comes at the same time that Saudi Arabia and Bahrain have accused Iran of meddling in the internal affairs of the oil-rich Gulf states.
2. Egypt’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has confirmed that the new Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil Elaraby is thinking about visiting Gaza—an area controlled by the terrorist group Hamas. Egypt has in the past turned its back on the group.
3. As the Wall Street Journal reports, Egypt is also cozying up to Syria. Egypt’s new intelligence chief, Murad Muwafi, made Syria the place for his first foreign visit.
Policies and words have consequences, Mr. President.
