NBC’s Holt: ‘I Winced’ When Voter Told Hillary Young People Don’t Think She’s Honest

On Friday, “NBC Nightly News” anchor Lester Holt told Democratic presidential candidate former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton that he “winced” when she was told by a voter that young people don’t think she’s honest.

Holt said, after playing a clip of a voter telling Hillary that people his age don’t think she’s honest, “And when he said that I winced. And I was wondering, you’ve obviously been in tough  battles, political battles, but do you get your feelings hurt sometimes?”

She answered, “Well, of course, it’s not pleasant to hear that. I have led a very public life now, for 25 years. I’ve been subjected to all kinds of attacks, and in large measure, because of what I stand for and what I fight for, but I’m going to answer questions, regardless of where they come from or who poses them.”

Holt then asked, “What frustrates you the most about perceptions about you?”

Hillary responded, “You know, I don’t even think about that anymore, because I did for a long time. You’re human. It is painful. It can be hurtful, and it’s especially so for your family and your friends who are just so hurt for you, but I’m — I have no reason to think that I’m going to be given any break. I don’t expect that. I expect I have to bring my best to this campaign, like I’ve brought my best to everything I’ve done, and I think I have a track record of getting results for people. I’m just going to do what I think is right for the country and let the voters decide.”
