Bernie Sanders has a breakfast appointment Wednesday morning with MSNBC host and longtime Africa-American power-broker Al Sharpton.
The two will reportedly meet Wednesday at the Harlem-based restaurant Sylvia’s, the same haunt that Sharpton chose when he sat down with then-Sen. Barack Obama in 2008.
The socialist senator from Vermont is down by a margin of almost 30 points to Clinton in South Carolina, the next state to hold its primary. The Sanders campaign likely is looking to gain some much needed momentum, exposure, and a few more key endorsements from high-profile blacks after a big win in New Hampshire.
“I am black radio five days a week,” Sharpton told The Daily Beast. “I am not guessing about what’s on the ground. I am on the ground.”
Bernie Sanders has gained a number of notable endorsements from black Democrats in recent weeks, including former NAACP president Ben Jealous.
Hillary Clinton is also reportedly scheduled to meet with Sharpton and tape an interview that will air on his Sunday show on MSNBC.
“I think that they have dealt with the reality that if people are going to address issues they will have to address them with the people involved in the issues,” Sharpton said. “You cannot appoint our leadership for us.”
The Sanders campaign raised more money in January than the Clinton camp.
