The majority of likely American voters say President Trump should stop a caravan of anywhere between 150 to 1,500 Central Americans from entering the United States, a new poll finds.
According to the latest poll by Rasmussen Reports, about 54 percent of likely voters said the Trump administration should stop the “hundreds of people from Central America who have come across Mexico in a highly publicized caravan” that are “threatening to enter the United States illegally any day now.”
Only about 37 percent of likely voters said the caravan of asylum-seekers and border-crossers should be allowed into the U.S. while they await their immigration and asylum hearings. Less than ten percent said they were not sure what to do with the caravan.
Likely voters were split on whether or not the Trump administration should punish Mexico for allowing the caravan of asylum-seekers to cross through their country to try to enter the U.S. by using the nation’s loose asylum laws.
About 41 percent of likely voters said the U.S. should punish Mexico for encouraging the caravan, while 42 percent said the U.S. should not punish Mexico.
The vast majority, about 65 percent, of likely voters did say that if the Trump administration allows the caravan of Central Americans into the U.S., it will incentivize more illegal immigration.
As Breitbart Texas reported, the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has temporarily closed off designated ports of entry that prevent the asylum-seekers from crossing into the U.S. The plan to limit the number of asylum-seekers will give immigration judges and attorneys more time to quickly review and decide on the mass flow of asylum and removal cases that have backlogged the process for years.
Already, though, Border Patrol agents have caught foreign nationals associated with the caravan crossing over the U.S.-Mexico border. In one case, a pregnant woman was caught illegally entering the U.S. “through a dark, treacherous canyon that is notorious for human and drug smuggling,” Chief Patrol Agent Rodney S. Scott said.
Breitbart News has reported how tent cities could be built along the southern border to prevent the asylum-seekers from becoming the beneficiaries of the ongoing “Catch and Release” program, whereby foreign nationals are released into the U.S. while they await immigration and asylum hearings.
